uh, it's more a concept than a finished piece.. i was thinking of living beings with nanomachines instead of cells, they are created by a matriarch and their initial form is an egg filled with nanomachines ,a dynamic dna (this means that these beings haven't a particular form, they can recombine their body as they want and in any form) and a full developed brain that can already think like a grown adult, but lacks experience and concepts.after being layed these eggs are trown in a pool of molecular acid : if they take the right form to survive in that environment they are considered worthy to live and are rescued. if not they simply are left in the pool to melt in the acid.
The matriarch prefers an acid-resistant human form but there are lot of possibilities, so someone develops gills and become a fish-like acid-resistant creature,some other just become confused mazes of roots and veins that crawl on the walls,searching for a safe place, and someone just doesn't hatch and stay in their eggs.
